Purpose

To provide practical information about the business/publishing side of writing for published authors and a forum for constructive dialogue about publishing concerns. Our readers are beyond the basics and are looking for practical help for building their freelance careers.

Manuscripts

Manuscripts must relate to the business/publishing side of writing or the writer’s freelance life and target published authors.

Ÿ How-to articles, 700-1000 words

Ÿ “Behind the Scenes” look at a publishing house (how it started, how editorial operates, current needs, submission procedures), 700-1000 words; query with name of company

Ÿ “Open Forum” guest editorials with practical application, 500-700 words

Rights  

First and reprint (note where/when published)

Payment

$20 for articles, $10 for book reviews. Paid on publication.

Submission

Ÿ Send all queries and manuscripts via e-mail, either as an attachment or in the body of the message, typed single spaced. Fax or mail photocopies of any quotes from published sources.

Ÿ Publishing house profile: Send e-mail statement from your contact that he or she has read your manuscript for accuracy and gives permission to have it published.

Ÿ Include subheads (not all caps) in each manuscript.

Ÿ Include your name, address, phone number, and e-mail address at the top of the manuscript.

Ÿ Include a one- or two-sentence bio, with some of your writing credits, at the end of the manuscript.
